ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the syntactic structures of formal and informal sentences in BISINDO. The formal data sentences are taken from the transcription of a BISINDO Signer on TV news videos, and the informal data sentences are taken from a transcription of a monologue video by a native BISINDO signer. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The findings of this study indicate that formal and informal sentences are dominated by simple sentences. Also, the researcher notices that there are five linguistic features (i.e. Simple Sentence, Repetition, Unusual Word Order, Spell-Out, Zero Subject) which are strikingly different between those occurring in formal and informal sentences. These five linguistic features may well be considered to be the key factors differentiating between formal and informal sentences in Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (BISINDO).
