“The Use of Instructional Media in the Teaching of English in Three Different Programs at SMP Negeri 1 Malang”

Abstrak


This study is aimed at describing the use of instructional media in the
teaching of English in three different programs (regular, acceleration, and SBI).in
SMPN 1 Malang. This study investigates whether the use of instructional media in
those three different programs are different or similar. It was expected that the
description of this study was beneficial as feedback for the school, the English
teachers, and other researchers. 
This study was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study
are the students and the teachers of regular, acceleration, and SBI programs of
SMPN 1 Malang 2008/2009 academic year. The data were obtained from the
teacher and the students. The instruments used were observations, interview, and
questionnaires. 
Based on the findings, the use of instructional media in the teaching of
English in the three different programs can be presented as follows. First, the
kinds of instructional media used to teach English in regular and acceleration
program varied, from printed materials to electronic media, while those used in
SBI program were mostly electronic. Second, the media were used in many kinds
of classroom activities. Third, the media used were able to make the students
active in the teaching learning process. Fourth, the problem of the teachers of the
three programs in using instructional media was similar, which was in the
preparation. Finally, all students of the three programs had positive responses
toward the use of instructional media. 
Based on the research findings, some suggestions were proposed. First, for
the school management, it is expected that they trained the teacher to use the
media available in school as soon as possible, especially new electronic media, so
that they can use the media effectively and efficiently in the teaching learning
process. For the English teacher of the three programs, they should have good
preparation in the use of instructional media so that the instruction can be
accomplished well. For the English teacher who teaches in acceleration and SBI
programs, it is suggested that the teacher use different approaches to teach the
students of acceleration and SBI program since the two programs are different in
terms of time of the study, curriculum, and the students’ intelligences (IQ). For
other researchers, it is recommended that they conduct other studies to investigate
other aspects of instructional media in the teaching of English.
