Western Greed to Rule over Islam: Dismantling The Politics of Representation in Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven focuses on the balanced portrayal between Muslims and Christians,
possibly to try in vein finding an understanding between Christians and
Muslims, in vein struggle to reduce the impact of “war on terror”.  In the struggle, the film tries to introduce
a “better alternative” to replace the fanaticism on certain religious faiths,
which is living based on Western humanism. 
The film suggests that all human beings will be better off without the
existence of religious faiths.  In this study, I will dismantle the politics
of representation used in Kingdom of
. Semiotics analysis and Post-colonial studies will be used to reveal
the answers for these questions: How Islamic principles see Western humanism
values in Kingdom of Heaven? What
politics of representation it implies? What strategy it uses to make it
reasonable? What is the implication of this strategy?

The politics of
representation in Kingdom of Heaven
implies that Western humanism values are the best.  However, both values are different and there
is no way of seeing Islamic values of humanity as inferior than those of
Western.  The politics of representation
includes techniques which emphasize the best ideal characteristics of human
being embodied in Balian of Ibelin and the characterization of humanized
Muslims (Western-like Muslims) and Muslims as the insignificant other.  Muslims in this film are always positioned as
the ones dominated by Western.

The politics of representation in the movie imply the Western greed to
rule over Muslims by constructing a discourse which naturalizes the Western
domination over Muslims in the movie.
