Forrys Yudhi Anggoro

Abstrak

Reading in a foreign language is important for academic studies as well as personal enrichment and the development of intelligence. Many factors have caused difficulty and failure especially in reading comprehension. Among many factors, students’ knowledge of vocabulary is one of important factors that influence reading comprehension ability. Thus, the concern of this study is investigating students’ reading comprehension ability related to their knowledge of vocabulary.

An expo-facto approach was adapted as the design of the study. 32 SMA students of State Senior High School 1 Batu were selected as the sample that represented SMA students in Batu and observed using a reading comprehension test as the research instrument.

It was discovered that the students had a moderate ability to understand the passages based on their mastery of the first 1,000 most frequent words as well as in understanding the passages based on the second 1,000 most frequent words. The students were able to understand the two types of passages with a similar number of problems or difficulties.

It was concluded the students’ reading comprehension ability related to their knowledge of the first 1,000 most frequent words was not significantly different from their reading comprehension ability related to their knowledge of the second 1,000 most frequent words.

Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that further studies should be conducted especially in investigating the students’ reading comprehension ability related to their knowledge of low frequency words. Considering the students’ reading comprehension ability discovered through this study, it is also recommended that the students should develop their reading comprehension ability especially expanding their vocabulary.
