Based on the result of the preliminary study, it was known that students of class 7.4 of SMPN 21 Malang had problems with vocabulary. Their problem such as (1) lack of motivated in developing their writing skill, (2) found difficulty in understanding and remembering the word, (3) most students like English depending on the way their teacher teaches them, and (4) feeling bored through the learning process. Thus, the researcher conducted the study to solve the problems. The researcher proposed Word Mapping strategy to improve writing skill for 7th Grade of Junior High School by enriching vocabulary mastery. The word mapping process was done in several steps; first, giving copy word mapping sheets and example, second, demonstrating how to use word mapping sheets, third, finding unknown or difficult word, fourth, using dictionary to find definition, synonym, antonym and other forms of words, fifth, drawing a picture to visualize the meaning of word and the last step is completing word mapping sheets.

In this research, the researcher used classroom action research. It consists of employed four stages: (1) planning, (2) implementing, (3) observing and (4) reflecting. The subjects of the study were class 7.4 of SMPN 21 Malang in the second semester of academic year of 2013/2014. There were 37 students in the class from different economic background. The researcher used one assessment that is vocabulary and writing test in the planning the action, then the researcher used two instruments, there are questionnaire, and field notes to collect the data in implementing the action. The English teacher who teaches in the class accompanied the researcher to give revision toward the lesson plan and suggestion toward the implementation of Word Mapping strategy in the classroom.

The research findings showed that Word Mapping strategy can improve students’ writing ability by enriching vocabulary. It can be seen from the improvement of students’ score in vocabulary-writing tests. 34 students (91%) out of 37 students can improve their score at least 10 points, only 3 students (9%) did not improve at least 10 points. So, the students can reach the criteria of success which is made by the researcher that is 85% of students can improve their score 10 points. The students seemed enjoyed and enthusiastic to continue improving their vocabulary using Word Mapping strategy. It proved that the strategy was effective to solve students’ problem in active vocabulary.

Based on research findings, the researcher suggested the English teacher to use Word Mapping to improve students’ writing ability by increasing vocabulary. It is suggested that further researchers need to vary the instruments or the way they implement the strategy and do the research using other skill in implementing word mapping strategy.
