Reading is an essential skill that should be taught in the primary school. It is in line with the objectives of the teaching English to young learners as stated in the Standards of Content of 2006. It is stated that one of the purposes of teaching English in elementary school is to develop communication competence in limited way as accompanying action in school context. Furthermore, the teaching of English in elementary schools should cover limited oral communication in which reading and writing play as supporting skills to the teaching and learning of the communication competence.

In teaching reading to young learners, media play a significant role in helping students to learn. However, it is still difficult to find suitable media for them. This problem occurs in SDN Sukun 3 Malang. At that school there are some media for teaching and learning activities but they do not really help the students. Hence, this research aims at developing an instructional medium in the form of a pop-up book which can be used to help students learn reading. The pop-up book is chosen because it can visualise and illustrate the stories. It is not just flat pictures in the paper but it contains some pop-up pictures which attract students’ interest. Then, with the pop-up pictures it is expected that the students can understand the text better.

The pop-up book material was developed based on the basic competence of reading for the fifth graders in the first term. The researcher adapted research and development framework by Borg and Gall (1983). There are eight steps administered during the development namely (1) needs analysis, (2) product development, (3) product validation, (4) product revision, (5) product try-out, (6) product revision, (7) product try-out, and (8) final production.

The study revealed that the medium attracted the students. They were interested in the presentation of the pop-up book as a medium of instruction as well as a teaching material. The students were enthusiastic and they were willing to read with the help of the pop-up book since it contains colourful-stand-up pictures.  As a result, the researcher found that English pop-up book is applicable to be used as an instructional medium.

The result of this research and development study is a nine-page pop-up book. It is 18 centimetres in width and 32 centimetres in length. Every page contains text story and one illustration. The researcher used black colour as the background and the main colour of the pop-up book. It is expected to give the contrast for the pictures. However, every page in pop-up book has a different theme design and a different colour to avoid boredom.

In addition, every page was provided with the colourful-stand-up picture as the illustration. Referring to the result of the research, it is expected that the pop-up book is applicable to be used as an instructional medium to encourage young learners to read.

Ketrampilan membaca adalah sebuah kemampuan penting yang harus diajarkan pada pebelajar sekolah dasar. Hal ini sesuai dengan tujuan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk sekolah dasar (SD) dalam standar isi tahun 2006. Dalam standard isi dikatakan bahwa salah satu tujuan dari pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah dasar adalah untuk mengembangkan kompetensi berkomunikasi dalam bentuk lisan secara terbatas untuk mengiringi tindakan (language accompanying action) dalam konteks sekolah. Dalam hal ini ketrampilan menulis dan membaca diarahkan untuk menunjang pembelajaran komunikasi lisan.

Dalam mengajar ketrampilan membaca pada pebelajar muda, penggunaan media sangat dianjurkan untuk membantu peserta didik belajar. Namun demikian, menemukan bahan ajar yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan masih tergolong sulit. Masalah ini muncul di SDN Sukun 3 Malang dimana rombongan belajar kelas lima memiliki media untuk belajar akan tetapi tidak begitu membantu proses belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan sebuah media berbentuk pop-up book yang diharapkan dapat mambantu peserta didik belajar membaca bahasa Inggris.

Materi pop-up book dikembangkan berdasarkan kompetensi dasar ketrampilan membaca untuk kelas lima semester pertama. Selanjutnya, penulis mengadaptasi model pengembangan Borg dan Gall (1983). Terdapat delapan langkah yang perlu diambil dalam model ini yaitu (1) analisis kebutuhan, (2) pengembangan produk, (3) validasi produk, (4) revisi produk, (5) uji coba produk, (6) revisi produk, (7) uji coba produk, (8) produksi akhir.

Selama uji coba produk berlangsung, rombongan belajar sangat antusias dalam menggunakan produk. Mereka tertarik dengan tampilan alat peraga yang digunakan peneliti. Selain itu mereka juga terlihat antusias untuk membaca dalam bahasa Inggris. Dari sini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pop-up book dapat digunakan sebagai media belajar bahasa Inggris.

Produk penelitian ini adalah pop-up book yang terdiri dari sembilan halaman. Pop-up book memiliki lebar 18 centimeter dan panjang 32 centimeter. Setiap halaman berisi teks bacaan dan satu ilustrasi. Penulis menggunakan warna hitam sebagai warna inti dalam pop-up book ini sehingga dapat menimbulkan warna kontras dengan gambar yang ada di dalam pop-up book. Akan tetapi, setiap halaman mempunyai desain yang bebeda-beda dan warna yang berbeda-beda pula untuk menghindari kebosanan. Selanjutnya, setiap halaman disajikan dengan gambar berdiri yang berwarna-warni sebagai ilustrasi bacaan. Merujuk pada hasil penelitian ini, peneliti mengharapkan media pop-up book ini bisa diaplikasikan sebagai alat peraga untuk mendorong semangat siswa membaca bacaan bahasa Inggris.
