THE USE OF WEB-BLOG TO IMPROVE THE GRADE X STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXTS AT SMAN 3 MALANG

ABSTRAK

 

Based on the result of preliminary study, it was known that the students of class X.2 at SMAN 3 Malang had problems in writing. Their problems were mostly caused by their lack of motivation in writing. To overcome the problem, the use of web-blog was proposed as media for students to write recount texts. The objective of the study is to improve the students' motivation in writing recount texts.

 

In this study, the research design used is classroom action research (CAR). The class action research consisted of four steps: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subjects are 32 students of class X.2  at SMAN 3 Malang in the first semester of 2011/2012 academic year. During the research, the researcher together with the assistance of the classroom English teacher designed the lesson plan, prepared materials and instruments, decided the criteria of success, and also assessed the students' writing.

 

The research findings demonstrated that the use of web-blog as media to write succeeded in improving the students' motivation in writing recount texts. It could be evidenced from the students' responses to the questionnaire given that had matched the criteria of success. From the questionnaire, it was known about 77% of the students thought that using web-blog as media to write could make them write easier. It was evidenced when the students used web-blog to do the drafting, developing, and posting the writing. In addition, there were 92% of the students who thought that web-blog can improve their motivation to write. Web-blog allowed them to share ideas to the people who access the blog and the web-blog media could make them to write easier. Meanwhile, from the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the action, the students did the activities well and they enjoyed writing using web-blog as the media.

 

Based on the result of the study, the classroom English teacher of class X.2 and the other English teachers in Senior High School are suggested to implement the use of web-blog as media to write not only for recount texts but also for the other text types. In addition, the further researchers are suggested to conduct similar studies by using the web-blog as media to write for different text types and involving different subjects.
