Of all language skills, reading has always been given the greatest emphasis in teaching English. There are some reasons for this. Firstly, reading skill is deemed important because it encourages better spelling, writing, comprehension, and more advanced vocabulary as well. Secondly, reading is important not only because it can give a lot of information but also pleasure and joy. Considering the importance of reading skills, the researcher conducted a preliminary study in one junior high school in Malang, that is, SMPN 02, to find out the students’ reading ability. It was found through observations questionnaires that the students had problems in comprehending narrative texts, particularly in identifiying the important elements of the texts, the result shows 79% of the students of class VII.H in SMPN 02 Malang scored below the KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum). To overcome this problem, a graphic organizer strategy is proposed to be applied in the teaching of reading. The technique is chosen because it is simple and considered suitable for students in the junior high school level. To comprehend the elements of the story the students are assigned to make a graphic organizer based of the story given.

Classroom Action Research (CAR) is used in this study, following Kemmis and McTaggart’s model (2000). The research is conducted in two cycles; each cycle covers planning an action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting on the observation. The subjects were 43 students of class VII.H of SMP 02 Malang. There were four kinds of data collected: the students’ scores, the field notes, the students’ questionnaires, the students’ response sheets. The data on the students’ score were obtained from the summary evaluation. The score were used to evaluate the students’ comprehension in reading narrative text. The field notes were made after each meeting during the CAR and were used to find out the students’ attitude toward the implementation of graphic organizer. The students’ questionnaires were distributed in the end of each meeting to know the students response toward the implementation of graphic organizer, and the students’ response sheets were distributed in the end of Cycle 2 to know the students’ opinion and feedback after graphic organizer was implemented.

The result of the research showed that the graphic organizer strategy effectively improved the students’ comprehension in reading narrative texts. The scores of the students in Cycle 2 increased compared to the scores in the preliminary study and Cycle 1. From Cycle 1, the percentage of the students who passed the KKM increased from 21% in preliminary study into 48%. Then from Cycle 1 into Cycle 2 the total of the students who passed the KKM after cycle 1 increased from 48% into 75%. Based on the students’ score distribution, the researcher concluded that the graphic organizer could help the students to improve their comprehension in reading narrative text.

Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that the English teachers at the school apply the graphic organizer strategy to improve the students’ comprehension in narrative text. In addition further researchers are suggested to carry out the study in different schools condition to see whether the strategy can be implemented effectively. It could be on the use of graphic organizer in the teaching of other types of the texts and/other levels of the students and also other types of graphic organizer.
