Appreciation of literature which is taught at high school level is novels appreciation. Novel that is used in the classroom appreciation is the one that fits to the psychological phases and age of the students so as to assist them  in the development of student character, namely young adult novels. Novel adolescents according to stage and age of the students psychologically easier for students to enjoy and understand the contents of the novel so that students can decipher opinions with precision and clarity about the elements that build the story. By enjoying and understanding the novel, students can broaden knowledge about the values of life contained in the novel and utilize the knowledge in real life.

This study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR). Learning model used is Jigsaw. Jigsaw is a mutual learning which consists of four stages, namely (1) the students work in heterogeneous teams, each student was given a "sheet of experts" consisting of different topics that should be the focus of attention of each member of the team; (2) after each student complete the task, students from different teams who have the same focus topics meet in "expert groups" to discuss their topic; (3) The experts then return to their teams and in turn taught his teammates on their topic, and (4) the students receive assessment that covers all topics by the teacher.

The problem in this study is how to improve the appreciation of the novel through the application of learning models Jigsaw in the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kauman, Tulungagung, the subject of class VIII-A. The purpose of this study is (1) to describe novel appreciation learning process of students and

(2) describe a novel appreciation of student learning outcomes through the implementation of Jigsaw learning model.

Based on the process of learning actions Jigsaw class VIII-A, which includes the initial group stage, the expert group stage, and the stage of the expert group back to the beginning of the group, it is found that the action able to change students engagement in the learning process. Seven aspects which is assessed in the novel appreciation learning activities activities include aspects such as the compactness, cooperation, caring, hard working, criticality, the accuracy of answers, and group reports. Students has increased on the seventh aspect, which initially amounted to 53% with very poor qualification on the first cycle to 88.6% with very excellent qualification on the second cycle.

Based on the results of learning, the action in the form of Jigsaw, able to elevate students competence in novel appreciation. It is found that  all students in the group achieve minimal learning qualification, which is usually abbreviated into KKM (75). All students, i.e 28 students (100%) were able to achieve B.Compared to the results of the action in the first cycle, students' ability to appreciate the building blocks and make a synopsis of the novel, has increased. Initially, in the first cycle, only 4 students (14.3%) who achieved the very good qualification and there are 24 students (85.7%) did not reach the qualification. But the result is turning better in the second cycle, the results of action which is initially 14.3% in the first cycle,turn to be 100% in the second cycle. It means that the is 85.7% increase. So, it can be concluded that the Jigsaw is able to increase students competence in appreciating novels.
