Abstract: This paper presents ethnopoetics from the linguistic perspective by making the best use of structural approach.  Ethnopoetics is essentially the study of poetic or verbal art performance; it tries to understand the nature and structure of poetic performance as situated in its local context.  Toward this end, ethnopoetics relies heavily on Jakobson’s linguistic poetics on the one hand and on literary poetics on the other, while using local knowledge to shed light on a given poetic performance to reveal its literary as well as its ritual significance.  To show the working mechanism of ethnopoetics, the paper looks critically at Hymes’s and Tedlock’s models, unraveling their respective strengths and weaknesses.  As a theoretical framework for investigating verbal art performance, ethnopoeticsas introduced in this paper—should help enrich the research in oral tradition in Indonesia.

Key words: ethnopoetics, linguistic poetics, local knowledge, Hymes’s model, Tedlock’s model, oral tradition.
