Developing the English 1 Coursebook for PAI Students of STAI Ma’arif Lampung. (Thesis)

Abstrak


This research and development (R&D) study involved the second year students and the graduates of Islamic Education Department (Pendidikan Agama Islam-PAI), the English teacher, the curriculum maker of STAI Ma'arif Lampung and three experts.

The objective of this study was to develop the English 1 coursebook for the second year students of non-English department. The procedure of the study was conducting needs survey, developing materials, experts and teacher validation, revising, trying out the materials, revising, and getting the final product.

The instruments in the needs survey were questionnaires, an interview guide, field note, and observation checklists. The data from the students were calculated in percentage and those from the teacher were described in a qualitative way. The data from the needs survey were used as the basis for the materials development. A validation form was used to collect the experts and teachers judgment on the materials. The experts validated them in terms of language, design and lay-out while the teachers and the curriculum maker evaluated them in terms of the suitability with the curriculum, content and the students' needs and level. The data from the experts, curriculum maker, and teachers were analyzed either quantitatively or qualitatively.

The try out was conducted by the English teacher to know the product's practicality, effectiveness, attractiveness, and level of difficulty of the materials. The subjects were the students of the second year. Thirty three students were asked to join the try-out activity. The data from the teacher and observation related to the practicality and effectiveness were presented quantitatively and descriptively. The data from the students related to clarity of the instructional objectives, attractiveness, and level of difficulty of the materials were analyzed quantitatively using percentages.

The first draft was in the form of a coursebook containing 8 units for semester two. The topics are smiling is charity, forgiving makes you relieved, let's guess what you see, what is your interest, let's describe it, let's share my experience, let's make a breakfast, and I have a story. The experts' judgment showed that the language and design were acceptable. However, revision had to be done in terms of directions' clarity, the appropriateness between the content and the students, some grammatical errors, and the arrangement of the map of the materials. Furthermore, during the debriefing activity in an informal situation, the language expert said that the developer should add the content in terms of the text model. The curriculum maker's judgment showed that the materials were appropriate with the curriculum. The teacher's judgments indicated that the content, the instructional objective, were quite appropriate, yet some revisions were still needed. However, the teacher said that it would be better if the material map reformulated based on the details in the syllabus. Then, the revision was done accordingly.

The result of the first try out showed that only three units namely units 3, 4, and 6 needed revising in terms of level of difficulty. The revision was done by simplifying the exercises. Then, the revised units were tried out. The result of the second try out showed that the revised three units were appropriate for the students.

The final product is in the form of a coursebook. The coursebook contains the instructions and suggestions for the teacher how to use the coursebook, the map of the material, the unit's title, the instructional objective, the text model, the exercises, the reflection, the follow-up, and the complementary evaluation.

As the result on the findings, it is concluded that the students' achievement were statistically improved. Based on the students' pre and post test, the improvement score were seen. Therefore, it is recommended for the teacher and the students of English I to use the developed material. Meanwhile, for the future researcher, it is also recommended to use as the guideline to develop an appropriate coursebook for the appropriate context.

Studi penelitian pengembangan (Research and Development- R & D)ini melibatkan mahasiswa tahun kedua, para lulusan, dosen bahasa Inggris, pengembang kurikulum STAI Ma'arif Lampung dan tiga orang ahli.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan materi Bahasa Inggris 1 untuk siswa tahun kedua jurusan non-Inggris. Prosedur yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah survey kebutuhan, mengembangkan materi, survei kebutuhan, pengembangan materi, validasi ahli dan dosen, revisi, uji coba product, revisi, dan produk akhir.

Instrumen dalam survei kebutuhan kuesioner, panduan wawancara, catatan lapangan, dan daftar observasi. Data dari siswa dihitung dalam persentase dan yang dari dosen digambarkan secara kualitatif. Data dari survei kebutuhan digunakan sebagai dasar untuk pengembangan materi. Format validasi digunakan untuk memperoleh penilaian dari para ahli dan dosen terhadap materi. Para ahli memvalidasi materi dalam hal bahasa, desain dan lay-out, sementara dosen dan pembuat kurikulum mengevaluasi materi dalam hal kesesuaian dengan kurikulum, isi dan kebutuhan dan tingkat kelas siswa. Data dari para ahli, pembuat kurikulum, dan dosen dianalisis baik secara kuantitatif maupun kualitatif.

Uji coba dilakukan oleh dosen bahasa Inggris untuk mengetahui kepraktisan, keefektifan, daya tarik, dan tingkat kesulitan materi. Subyeknya adalah mahasiswa tahun kedua. Tiga puluh tiga siswa diminta untuk bergabung dalam aktivitas uji coba. Data dari guru dan observasi berkaitan dengan kepraktisan dan keefektifan disajikan secara kuantitatif dan deskriptif. Data dari mahasiswa yang terkait dengan kejelasan tujuan pembelajaran, keefektifan, daya tarik, dan tingkat kesulitan bahan dianalisis secara kuantitatif dengan menggunakan persentase.

Draft pertama dalam bentuk coursebook berisi 8 unit untuk semester dua. Topik-topiknya antara lain adalah smiling is charity, forgiving makes you relieved, let's guess what you see, what is your interest, let's describe it, let's share my experience, let's make a breakfast, and I have a story. Penilaian para ahli menunjukkan bahwa bahasa dan desain bisa diterima. Namun, revisi harus tetap dilakukan dalam hal kejelasan petunjuk, kesesuaian antara konten dan siswa, beberapa kesalahan tata bahasa, dan penyusunan peta materi. Selain itu, selama kegiatan tanya jawab dalam situasi informal, ahli bahasa mengatakan bahwa pengembang harus menambahkan konten dalam hal model teks. Penilaian pembuat kurikulum menunjukkan bahwa materi sudah sesuai dengan kurikulum. Penilaian dari dosen menunjukkan bahwa isi, tujuan instruksional sudah cukup tepat, namun beberapa revisi masih dibutuhkan. Bagimanapun, dosen mengatakan bahwa akan lebih baik jika peta materi dirumuskan berdasarkan rincian dalam silabus. Kemudian revisi dilakukan menurut penilaian ahli dan dosen serta saran-saran dari mereka.

Hasil uji coba pertama keluar menunjukkan bahwa hanya tiga unit yaitu unit 3, 4, dan 6 yang perlu direvisi dalam hal tingkat kesulitan. Revisi dilakukan dengan menyederhanakan latihan. Kemudian, unit yang sudah direvisi diujicobakan lagi. Hasil uji coba kedua menunjukkan bahwa dari tiga unit telah yang telah revisi sudah sesuai bagi siswa.

Produk akhir adalah dalam bentuk sebuah coursebook. coursebook berisi petunjuk dan saran untuk dosen dan siswa bagaimana menggunakan coursebook, peta materi, judul unit, tujuan pembelajaran, model teks, latihan, refleksi, tindak lanjut, dan evaluasi pelengkap.

Sebagai hasil temuan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa prestasi siswa meningkat secara statistik. Berdasarkan pre dan post test siswa, peningkatan nilai terlihat. Selanjutnya dianjurkan untuk mahasiswa dan dosen bahasa Inggris I untuk menggunakan materi yang dikembangkan. Sementara itu, bagi penelitian selajutnya, juga direkomendasikan untuk digunakan sebagai pedoman untuk mengembangkan coursebook yang sesuai untuk konteks.
