Enhancing Students’ Reading Comprehension Through Contextual Guessing Strategy

Test of English Proficiency (TEP), TOEFL-like test, course is a part of English course in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim and takes thirty percent of the English II course. All of students in all departments except English department are provided six credits of English course. TEP course for non-English deparment students has been running for ten years. However, students especially those who are not from English department face difficulties in its sections especially reading comprehension. The research aims to answer the research problem on how the contextual guessing strategy can enhance the TEP reading comprehension of Islamic Banking students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.

This research design used in this research is collaborative Classroom Action Research. It consisted of one cycle involving four stages namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The cycle consists of three meetings and one meeting for the reading test. The subjects were 25 of the fourth semester students of Islamic Banking program in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The data were obtained through reading test, observation checklist, and field notes.

The findings showed that the implementation of the contextual guessing strategy in teaching reading is able to improve the students’ reading achievement and involvement. The improvements can be seen from the criteria of success achieved that was shown by the result of the reading test and observation checklist. The students’ individual score percentage had achieved 100% of all 25 students passed the set criteria of success. However, the researcher suggests the teacher to implement the strategy in every meeting of reading activity to help students to be more independent in using the strategy.
