ABSTRAK

The teaching of English writing skill has been continuously investigated and developed to find the best way for succesful learning. Writing is a complex process that involves higher and lower order thinking skills because it covers generating ideas and putting the ideas into the written forms. In general, the process of writing covers four main stages, namely planning, drafting, editing, and revising. As the student-centered approach becomes the trend in todays’ classroom practices, and process writing approach becomes more popular than the product writing approach, peer feedback technique has been commonly investigated and recommended to be implemented in writing classes. Several research findings have reported the benefits of peer feedback technique in the writing class, such as increasing the students’ communication skills, promoting student centered learning, and increasing students’ writing skill.

This research investigates the effectiveness of peer feedback technique on the writing achievement of the students of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in the 2015/2016 academic year. The reseach design was a quasi experiment using Pretest Posttest Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The population of this research was all of the fourth semester students of English Department taking Writing-2 class in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, which consisted of 8 classes. This research used two classes as the research samples which were randomly selected. The data of this research were obtained from the results of the pretest and the posttest. The experimental group was taught essay writing by using peer feedback technique, while the control group was taught essay writing by using teacher feedback technique. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by using ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) in the SPSS Statistics 17.0.

The results of this research reveal that peer feedback technique has a signifiant effect on the writing achievement of the students of  UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The use of peer feedback technique can increase the students’ writing skills through the comments that the students give to and receive from their peers during the learning process. This collaborative process has a positive contribution on the learning process. This also shows that peer feedback technique improves the students’ writing skills. Therefore, it is recommended that writing lecturers implement peer feedback technique in their writing class to empower the students’ writing skills
