Based on the preliminary study on the problems faced by the fourth semester of Social Studies students in the academic year of 2015/2016, this research aims at describing how Numbered Heads Together Strategy can improve their speaking skill achievement and involvement in the teaching and learning process. For that, the research problem of this study is How can Numbered Head Together Strategy improve the speaking skill of the fourth semester of Social Studies students in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang?

The research design used in this research was collaborative Classroom Action Research. It consisted of one cycle which involved four stages namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The cycle encompassed five meetings and one meeting for the speaking test. The subjects were 25 of the fourth semester of Social Studies students in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The data were obtained through speaking test, observation checklist, field notes and questionnaire.

The findings showed that the implementation of the appropriate procedure of Numbered Head Together Strategy in teaching speaking can improve the students’ speaking achievement and involvement. The improvements can be seen from the criteria of success achieved that was shown by the result of the speaking test and observation checklist. The students’ individual score percentage had achieved 84% out of 25 students passed the passing grade or KKM that was greater or equal to 60. The students’ mean score had also improved greatly become 69.6. Moreover, their involvement reached 93.7% which was categorized into excellent involvement. Those scores were obtained by the students in the one cycle only.

The improvements of the students’ speaking achievement and involvement was reached by applying the following steps of NHT:  (1) review the  purpose of the text, generic structure, and language features briefly. (2) mention parts of describing person.(3) divide  the students into some of groups. (4) discuss with their group. (5) call number (6) the students who get those number stand up and present the result of their discussion. (7) give correction in grammar, vocabularies, and pronunciation. (8) reflection.

 

Based on the findings, it is suggested for other  lecturers that they should apply this strategy in their classes. Also, for the future researchers to be able to conduct further research in the teaching of speaking at different semester or another speaking level in order to discover more advantages and effectiveness of Numbered Head Together Strategy .
