Learning English as a foreign language is usually difficult for Indonesian students. Especially in reading comprehension, reading problems occured at lexical, phrase, clause, sentence, and discourse levels. Based on the preliminary study conducted with the tenth graders of SMA Surya Buana Malang who were about to be eleventh graders, the resarcher found that the students had problems in identifying topic, main idea, reference, vocabulary, and negative attitudes toward reading. The issue attracted the researcher to conduct collaborative action research with the English  teacher on improving the reading comprehension ability and vocabulary mastery through game and questioning technique. Posing questions can help students solve their reading problems i.e by guiding them in understanding the readings. Game can also be used to attract and create new classroom athmosphere. By utilizing questioning technique and game, the researcher aimed at solving the eleventh graders’ reading comprehension problem.

In conducting action research, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher who teaches the eleventh graders of SMA Surya Buana Malang. The action research was carried out by adapting the procedure developed by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1988) which consists of four stages: In the planning stage, the preparation for the procedures of carrying out the teaching and learning process proceed by the researcher together with the teacher, such as choosing the materials and the media, creating the assessment, deciding the criteria of success, the expected outcomes, and designing the lesson plan. In implementing, the plan prepared in the planning stage was carried out into the real class. The observation stage was performed during the implementation of the questioning and game. In the last stage, the researcher reflected by reviewing what had happened in the class and decided whether the criteria of success had been reached.

Findings showed that the questioning technique implemented in the three reading phases were successful in improving the Eleventh graders’ reading comprehension and the game implemented in teaching reading at SMA Surya Buana Malang made the students more attracted to the lesson. Considering the benefit of questioning technique and game implementation in improving the eleventh graders’ reading comprehension, it is recommended that English teachers who have same problems utilize the technique. Teachers and researcher who plan to conduct similar research should prepare and plan the questions carefully in order to successfully guide and encourage the students in learning. Teacher should consider students’ inability to understand the questions and plans the questioning with the right level of difficulty so it can be understood by the students to increase the number of students who participate in answering the questions and to prevent silence.
