Yulianto, Aris, 2016. Based on the researcher’s observation and documentation study at MTs Sunan Kalijogo, he found that the students have not actively participated yet in the learning activities. The students kept silent most of the times and their capabilities to argue and enquire were low, with only 12% of them were active in the learning process. Only few students went to the library regularly to find information and make use of the learning resources available in there. Not many of them had their own textbooks that they could use as a resource for their learning. Until then, most of the learning process of Social studies matter of geography was in the form of lecture and individual assignment using questions found in Students’ Activity Sheet (LKS) published by a certain publisher. Regarding this situation, it is deemed necessary to implement a learning method that would encourage the students’ active participation through a model known as project based learning, which was founded on lesson plan. The students would then actively participate in the learning process as they experience the process directly. The aim of this research is to increase the participation of the students in the learning process.

his classroom action research was done in two cycles, each consisted of three meetings. The sample was 26 students of Grade VII A of MTs SunanKalijogo, on the even semester of 2014-2015. Data on the students’ participation was taken from observation sheets of cycle I and cycle II, analyzed using table % and gain score.

The research shows that the level of the students’ active participation in the learning process experienced an increase from cycle I to cycle II. This increase was due to the implementation of project based learning model, founded on lesson study, where the students were encouraged to work on the LKS, and prepare and complete assignments in groups. Completed assignments were presented in groups and discussed interactively. The students’ participation being measured includes: 1) the participation to ask questions, 2) the participation to answer questions, 3) the participation in discussion, and 4) the participation in group work.

What can be concluded from this research is that the implementation of project based learning model, founded on lesson study, could enhance students’ level of participation of IPS Geography subjects. Grounded on the conclusion and finding, it is suggested that teachers: 1) prepare well the learning resources they use, 2) pay a close attention to students’ activity over the Internet so that they would not access any information unrelated to the material being taught, and 3) take home assignments are necessary to enhance the participation in group.
