Learning to read is a life-long process. It is begun during the earliest interactions with families and communities. Through demonstration by others one learns the pleasure and purposes of prints. These processes involve in shaping one belief and feeling toward reading which known as reading attitude. EFL students in Indonesia still struggle in their reading, it is believed that they should build their positive attitude toward reading first. Yet, not much is known about their reading attitude and the practice done by the students. Therefore, this study is intended to describe the reading attitudes and what practice done by the students with positive reading attitude

This study was a case study research which concern on the attitudes and practices students held toward reading. One teacher, twenty nine students of SMAN 1 Puri Mojokerto, and three parents of students with positive reading attitude participated in this study. A questionnaire was distributed and interviews and observation were conducted. Twenty nine students of tenth grade in language class were given reading attitude questionnaire and three selected students were interviewed and observed. A teacher and the students’ parents were also interviewed and observed. The three samples were chosen based on the result of reading attitude questionnaire that have high scores and also was based on teacher recommendation.

The result of the study showed that the majority of the students have moderate attitudes toward reading that is 59%. There were students that have positive reading attitudes, but relative small that is 17%. Based on the interviews of the three selected students, it revealed that literacy experience at home and school has a role in the formation of reading attitude. Early literacy at home environment seems to have traced to their attitude toward reading and practices when they are grown up. The students’ literacy experiences in school, such instructional practice and reading materials, also gave effect on the student’s development of the attitudes. From the observation, the instruction in tenth-grade students’ classroom appears to use group work in the most activities in order to develop students’ independent reading.

Hence, parents and teachers are recommended to be an explicit model of reading for students. The teacher as the one who hold an important role in developing students’ attitude toward reading, especially English, should consider the best practice for the students. The principal and librarians should support the reading of the students by providing various kinds of books and reading activities.
