Conjunction takes an important role in the process of sentence forming. In this case, the function of conjunction is to correlate ideas in a sentence. The result of this correlation is able to create a unity of themes and topics in sentence. This study is conducted to describe conjunction in compound sentences by first year students of vocational high school. The purpose of this study is to describe (1) the forms of conjunction in compound sentence by first year students of vocational high school, (2) the types of conjunction in compound sentence by first year students of vocational high school, and (3) the meanings of conjunction in compound sentence by 10th grade students of vocational high school.

This study adopted qualitative approach design with multiple-site case study based on the variations of the observed data. The focuses of this study are forms, types, and meanings of conjunction in the compound sentence by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang and Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School Malang. The data in this study are taken from essays written by 10th grade students from State Vocational High School 3 Malang and Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School Malang.

The results of study is explained into 3 parts. First, the forms of conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang is independent (single) conjunction and. Then, the forms of conjunction found in compound-complex sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang is independent (single) conjunction  because, so, as if, when, for, whenever, since and although. Different with the forms of conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang, the forms of  conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School Malang are independent (single) conjunction and, yet, but, and then dependent (complex) conjunction but rather. Furthermore, the forms of conjunction found in compound-complex sentences by 10th grade students of Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High is independent conjunction because, so that, as if, when, who, while and dependent conjunction after and before. Second, types of conjunction in compound sentence by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang are classified become coordinating conjunction and subordinating conjunction. The type of coordinating conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang is and. The types of subordinating conjunction found in compound-complex sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang are because, so that, after, as if, for, when, as, whenever, since, although. Different with the types of coordinating conjunction and subordinating conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of Vocational High School 3 Malang, the types of coordinating conjunction found in compound sentences by 10th grade students of Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School are and, but, nor, yet and types of subordinating conjunction found in compound-complex sentences by 10th grade students of  Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School are because, so, after, if, when, before, who, while. Third, the meaning of conjunctions depicted in simple compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang is confirmation, and then meaning of conjunction in complex compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang are causing, purpose, time, prerequisite, concessive. Different with the meaning of conjunctions depicted in simple compound sentences by 10th grade students of State Vocational High School 3 Malang, the meaning of conjunctions depicted in simple compound sentences by 10t grade of Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School are confirmation dan contradiction. Formerly, the meaning of conjunctions depicted in compound-complex sentences by 10th grade students of Telkom Shandy Putra Vocational High School are causing, purpose, time, prerequisite, attributive. 

 

Based on the results of this study, it is suggested as follows. For the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject, it is suggested to understand that forms, types and meanings of conjunction are able to be used as conceptual guidelines of the first year students’ tendency in using conjunction, especially in writing compound sentences. For students, it can be a parameter for them to know their understanding and knowledge about conjunction so that they can increase their ability in writing sentences. For other researchers, the result of this study can be used as empirical data related to the forms, types and meanings of conjuction which are commonly depicted in compound sentences compiled by 10th grade students of vocational high school. This can be used as reference to conduct research and development study (method, strategy, and teaching materials) which is related to the conjunction.
