This research pointed to implement process-based approach combined with cue cards to improve the ability of eight graders of SMPN 1 Bancar in writing descriptive texts. The result of the preliminary study showed that the majority of the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text is low.This study applied collaborative class action research. The researcher was help by his collaborator in designing the lesson plans, determining the criteria of success, implementing the action, observing, and reflecting on the action. This study involved 30 students of grade VIII-C at SMPN 1 Bancar Tuban in the second semester of academic year 2015/2016. In this study, the researcher used the students’ writing test, questionnaire and field notes as the research instruments.

This study was conducted in one cycle which consisted of 5 meetings. The activities in the teaching learning process used process writing which included planning, drafting, revising, and editing stages. The steps of the implementation of process-based approach combined with cue cards were as follows: (1) in planning stage, the students observed cue cards and took notes as the outline by the help of teacher’s guided questions; (2) in drafting stage, the students began to write the first draft based on the notes; (3) in revising stage, the students revised their draft based on the teacher’s comments and feedback and conducted peer correction; and (4) in editing stage, the students edited their draft based on the result of peer correction.

The research findings show that the implementation of process-based approach combined with cue cards can improve the sudents’ ability in writing descriptive texts. It is indicated by the fact that the students’ mean score in the preliminary study was 59.83, whereas after the implementation of process-based approach combined with cue cards the score increased to 82.75. All students improved their score more than 10 points and their improvement level also increased one level or above. In addition, the questionnaire result showed that all students (100%) gave positive response toward the implementation of process-based approach combined with cue cards.

Regarding the findings of the research, the English teachers are recommended to employ this strategy in similar teaching learning activities. For the principals, the results of this study will be advantageous to provide the strategy which can be used by their English teachers in improving the quality of the teaching learning activities in their school. Finally, for the next researchers, it is recommended that they use this research as a reference in conducting similar research especially to improve the students’ writing ability.
