The current action research probes the implementation of process genre approach utilizing documentary films to improve the ability of SMPN 3 Mempawah Timur in writing descriptive texts. Prior to the practice of applying process genre approach employing documentary films, students’ writing performance was averagely very poor.

This research applied 2 cycle classroom action research involving19 eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Mempawah Timur in academic year 2015/2016. Observation checklists, field notes, writing tests, and questionnaires were used to collect the data.

In this research, the implementation of process genre approach to utilizing documentary films embraced the following stages: (1) In BKoF stage, students were assigned to observe a documentary film to activate their prior knowledge about how to describe someone.  (2) In MoT, they were given model text and some exercises related to the model text, such as comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics exercises. The students also observed a documentary film to answer questions in the descriptive drafting guide. (3) In JCoT, the students collaboratively observed a documentary film while answering the questions in the descriptive drafting guide. In this stage they were assigned to do drafting, revising, editing, and publishing their writing product. (4) In ICoT, the students individually carried out the process of planning, drafting, revising, and editing by utilizing documentary film. The researcher applied 3 part Join Construction of Texts and 2 part Independent Construction of Texts for each cycle. Additionally, the researcher utilized different documentary film for each stage of process genre approach.

The research findings showed that the implementation of process genre approach to utilizing documentary films improved the students writing ability. The students’ writing products had successfully met the Criteria of Success. The number of students who obtained the scores above the minimum passing grade increased from 32% students in Cycle 1 to 100% students in Cycle 2. Similarly, the students’ mean score improved from 6.6 in Cycle 1 to 9.0 in Cycle 2.

Finally, the implementation of process genre approach to utilizing documentary films contributed to the improvement of the students’ writing performance in all aspect of writing. It is suggested for English teachers and future researchers to apply this approach and media with different level of students and kinds of texts.
