Teaching vocabulary at junior high school level especially for grade VII must be conducted well. Unfortunately, English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Kersana-Brebes have neglected it. This fact is reflected through the unsatisfactory result of vocabulary test on a preliminary study conducted by the researcher toward 36 students of grade VII A. It is clear that the main problem faced by the students in comprehending the discourse is the lack of vocabulary. Hence, the researcher tried to explore the possibility of using cartoon videos through scientific method to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement. The benefits of using cartoon video in teaching English vocabulary are children enjoy language learning with cartoon video, cartoon video is an effective way of studying body language, and children gain confidence through repetition. 

The present research used collaborative classroom action research which comprises of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the implementation, and reflecting the result of the implementation. The subjects were 36 students of grade VII A of SMP Negeri 2 Kersana-Brebes in academic year 2015/2016. The research instruments used to collect the data were vocabulary tests, field notes, observation checklists, and questionnaire. The materials used referred to the syllabus of Curriculum 2013 in the second semester and the topic discussed was Kinds of Professions, Work Places, and Job Description of Professions with simple present tense as the material enrichment.

The result of the vocabulary test in cycle 1 showed that 36 students of grade VII A (100%) successfully passed the criteria of success, even more. Their mean score was 87.66. The steps in the strategy include: (1) observing the cartoon video and the subtitles, (2) pronouncing the vocabulary items, (3) taking a note for the unfamiliar vocabulary items and then discussing them together, (4) writing vocabulary items based on the cartoon video, (5) completing the dialogue with appropriate vocabulary, (6) copying sentences, (7) constructing other sentences by using the same pattern, (8) practicing a dilogue by using the silent and unsubtitled cartoon video in pairs, (9) making a dialogue individually.

More than 30 students (>80%) gave positive responses after the implementation of cartoon videos through scientific method. Based on the research results above, it is recommended that cartoon videos be used as a solution to a better English vocabulary teaching. It is also suggested the future researchers conduct similar research on the same or different issue but different levels or grades in different setting.
