Writing is one of complex language skills as basic competency demanded by curriculum that should be achieved by high school students. The preliminary study revealed that the students had some difficulties in writing descriptive text. Besides the problems in using components of writing, low motivation in writing also became one of the major problems. This study is intended to implement Team Pair Solo strategy using picture puzzle and sensory details chart to improve   students’ writing ability

This study employed Classroom Action Research as the research design. A class of 24seventh grade students of SMP Islam Athirah Makassar academic year 2015/2016 were the subjects of the study. Planning, implementing, observing and reflecting were conducted in one cycle which consisted of 5 meetings, 4 meetings for the implementing of the strategy and 1 meeting for conducting the writing test.  The required data of this study were collected through a writing test, observation checklist, field notes, and a questionnaire for students.

The findings of this study revealed that the implementation of the strategy succeeded in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The data from the final writing indicated that the strategy improved the students’ writing with their average score increased 22.08 points from 53.75 to 75.83 after the treatment. In this test the students produced better writing. Their attention to the aspects of good writing was better than in preliminary test. The findings of this study also revealed the number of students who passed the minimum passing grade increased to 83.34%. It was also found from the observation data that the students were categorized as high and very high involvement in learning process. The improvement above was possible because of the implementation of the strategy as follows:  (1) in a team (group of four), asking yes no questions to get a clue about the animal, solving the picture puzzle, completing the sensory details chart based on the picture puzzle, discussing and developing the topic sentence, (2) continuing writing the supporting ideas or details, peer feedback by completing peer edit worksheet after reading each pair writing, discussing the result (3) individually revising and editing the whole final writing

The result of this study showed that the implementation of Team Pair Solo strategy using picture puzzle and sensory details chart can improve the ability of the students in writing descriptive text and improve the students’ involvement in teaching and learning process. English teachers who face similar problems can use Team Pair Solo strategy as an alternative solution in teaching writing. It also can give potential relevant reference for future researchers.
