The difficulty young learners faced in learning English is mainly because they lack vocabulary. Furthermore, the teacher does not use appropriate media that can motivate them to learn English, particularly English vocabulary.

The study aimed at developing multimedia-based thematic integrative vocabulary board games as media to learn English vocabulary for young learners.

This study adapts Research and Development designby Borg and Gall (1989) which consists of some stages: needs analysis, planning, product development, product validation, and product field testing. This research design is combined with the procedure for developing games by Trueblood and Szabo (1974) to develop the product of the study. The procedures are determining the goal of the game, developing materials, designinga set of rules and procedure, developing feedback, developing challenging situation, developing possible variation, and evaluating the game concepts. The instruments used to obtain the data in the present study are interview guides for the English teacher, the students, and the Information and Communication Technology teacher, validation sheets for the experts, and questionnaires for the English teacher and the students. The data obtained are then analyzed qualitatively and quantitavely.

The product of this study is in the form of a package of interactive CD and two versions of the manual book: English and Indonesian. The product is designed to be used by elementary school students grades four and five. The results of the analyses carried out in the validation and the field test stages show that the experts, the English teacher, and the students (as young leaners) show positive attitude toward the use of the product. However, there are some minor revisions based on the feedback from the experts should be conducted to improve the quality of the product of the present study. The revisions are on the layout of the product and the use of pronouns in the Indonesian manual book. The product of this study is expected to be beneficial for all parties: young  learners (in this context is elementary school students) as media to learn English vocabulary, the English teacher as alternative media to teach English, especially English vocabulary. The results of this study is also expected to be beneficial for the other researchers with same aim as reference to conduct reasearch on media based technology.
