This article is intended to explore the practices of exemplary senior high school teachers in teaching writing to prepare students for national and school examinations. Employing descriptive qualitative design, four teachers who met the predetermined criteria were selected as the subjects of the research. The findings revealed that the teachers did collaborative activities in designing lesson plan. In addition, various preparatory activities were designed. In the classroom practice, the teachers did strategic time management by teaching the theory of writing in the first half of second semester so the other half can be used for review and writing practices. Various types of writing tasks were performed to provide experiences in writing texts of different types. As an alternative to overcome the problems of large number of students, collaborative writing was done. In assessing students’ writing, the teachers used three kinds of assessments, namely, indirect, direct, and portfolio assessments. Meanwhile, holistic and analytic scorings were used to identify students’ strength and weaknesses in writing as well as to measure students’ achievement. It can be concluded that the teachers were enthusiastic to prepare students to perform the best in the national and school examination as can be seen in the variety of activities they did in the classroom.
