The objectives of this study were observing the effectiveness of animation videos on students’ comprehension of narrative texts, the effectiveness of the animation videos on students’ comprehension of narrative texts across the vocabulary mastery of past verbs, and the interaction between the vocabulary mastery of past verbs and the animation videos.

This research was a quasi experimental research. The accessible population of this study was the 8th grade students of SMP Laboratorium UM.  Through the selection using homogeneity test, class E became the experimental group and class G became the control group. 32 students in each class were used as the sample. The teaching activity of both groups was reading comprehension activity using narrative texts in the form of fables. The experimental group was taught by using animation videos, while the control group was taught by using conventional reading texts. The same narrative texts were given to the experimental and the control groups.

The findings showed that there was significant difference in the comprehension of narrative texts between the students taught by using the animation videos and those taught by using conventional reading texts.  The significant difference was also shown in the comprehension of narrative texts between the high vocabulary mastery and the low vocabulary mastery students.  However, this study could not find the interaction between the vocabulary mastery of past verbs and the animation videos.

Theoretically, this research contributed valuable insight on the implementation of the use of animation video as the medium in the teaching of reading comprehension.  It is good for the English teachers who teach teenagers or even children to use animation videos when they have to teach reading comprehension especially when the reading material is narrative text.  The future researchers are suggested to conduct further research investigating the effectiveness of animation videos in different area of subject matters, skills or courses in different level of study.
