One of the special qualities of problem-based learning model is its ability to develop critical and creative thinking ability. Nur (2011) said that PBM model can motivate the students to learn how to think about problems in the real life. This model also ”provides a supporting situation for improving critical thinking skills, analysis as well as complex problem solving in the real life” (Coreobima, 2010). The influence of PBM model on the students’ critical and creative thinking ability emerges from the problem given to or found by them. Moreover, the learning steps also guide them to think critically and creatively. Problems and steps in PBM motivate the students to think in order to find the alternative solution. The students are required to choose one of the available alternatives with logical reason. This research is aimed to analyze the influence of PBM on the Kanjuruhan University students’ critical and creative thinking ability in hydrosphere lesson. The subjects of the research are class C as the experimental class and class B as the control class. The research subjects are taken with random sampling technique soon after the class homogeneity is accounted. The research design of this thesis is quasi experiment with essay test as the research instrument. The analysis technique used in this research is t-test with the assist from SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The research shows that there is a significant influence exhibited in the average score of the experimental class and control class both in critical and creative thinking abilities. Based on the t-test result on the creative thinking ability, the significance level of critical thinking ability on p-level is 0,011 and the significance level of creative thinking ability on p-level is 0,002.
