This study was conducted to improve the ability of the twelfth graders of MAN Bangil in writing a narrative text. Comic strips were proposed to be applied in the teaching of writing not only because they are appealing, but also because it is a good medium to introduce and present the content, organization and the grammatical features of narrative texts. In addition, some previous studies found that comic strips were able to stimulate the students to be more actively involved in the writing activity, so their writing ability could be enhanced.

This study used collaborative classroom action research design. The researcher and her collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan, setting the criteria of success, implementing the action, observing the action, and making reflection. The subjects of this study were XII language program students of MAN Bangil of the 2011/2012 academic year. This study was conducted by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting.

The main activity of the teaching and learning process was (1) building knowledge of the field related to the narrative texts and their features (including grammar theory of Past Tense, Direct & Indirect Speech), (2) modelling of the narrative text and writing narrative text using comic strips, (3) joint construction of the text (collaborative writing with group and pairs), and (4) independent writing as the writing test. In the first meeting, the students were given a narrative text then the students analyzed the generic structure and language features used in the text. After that the researcher gave comic strips followed by a modelling on how to write a narrative text based on the story in the comic strips. In collaborative writing, the students wrote a narrative text collaboratively in group and in pairs by following the procedures in modelling. In writing test, the students wrote a narrative text individually and the scores were used as their writing achievement.

The result of the study showed that the use of comic strips through writing process can improve the students's ability in writing a narrative text. The percentage of the students achieving the score above minimum passing criterion (70) had improved from only 9.70% (3 students out of 31 students) in the preliminary study to 61% (19 students out of 31 students) in Cycle 1 and to 100% in Cycle 2 (31 students). Besides, the score of each aspect; content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics, also improved.

Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested for English teachers to implement comic strips in teaching writing, especially narrative texts. In implementing the comic strips, the teachers should vary in the way how they teach students so that the students will not get bored. It is also suggested that the teachers be selective in choosing the appropriate story or stories for students to make them focused and interested in joining the class. For further researchers, it is suggested to use comic strips for different text types, skill, and on different grades and levels of education. In addition, further researchers are suggested to provide comic strips with more appropriate mechanics aspect, primarily capitalization in the speech bubbles.

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas dua belas MAN Bangil dalam menulis teks narasi. Comic strips diusulkan untuk diterapkan dalam pengajaran menulis bukan hanya karena menarik, tetapi juga karena merupakan media yang baik untuk memperkenalkan isi, susunan, dan ciri kebahasaan teks narasi. Selain itu, beberapa penelitian sebelumnya menemukan bahwa comic strips dapat mendorong siswa untuk lebih aktif dalam kegiatan menulis sehingga kemampuan menulis mereka meningkat.

Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan Collaboraive Classroom Action Research. Peneliti dan guru bekerja sama dalam merancang RPP, menetapkan kriteria kesuksesan, melaksanakan tindakan, mengamati tindakan, dan melakukan refleksi. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XII-program bahasa MAN Bangil tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan mengikuti beberapa langkah yaitu, merencanakan, melaksanakan, mengamati, dan melakukan refleksi.

Kegiatan inti proses belajar mengajar dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) mengaktifasikan background knowledge siswa tentang teks narasi dan tata bahasa yang digunakan dalam teks tersebut, (2) pemberian model teks narasi diikuti dengan pemberian model menulis narasi menggunakan comic strips dengan mengaplikasikan process writing, (3) menulis secara kolaborasi dalam kelompok dan teman sebangku, (4) dan menulis secaraPdividu sebagai tes menulis di pertemuan terakhir. Di pertemuan pertama, siswa diberi teks narasi kemudian mereka menganalisa susunan umum teks, ciri kebahasaan, dan kata penghubung yang digunakan dalam teks tersebut. Setelah itu, peneliti memberikan model bagaimana menulis sebuah teks narasi berdasarkan comic strips. Dalam menulis secara kolaborasi, siswa menulis teks narasi dalam kelompok atau teman sebangku dengan mengikuti langkah-langkah yang dicontohkan di tahap modelling. Pada tes menulis siswa menulis teks narasi secara mandiri.

Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan comic strips melalui writing process dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks narasi. Persentase siswa yang mencapai Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (70) meningkat dari hanya 9,70% (3 siswa dari 31 siswa) di penelitian awal menjadi 61% (19 siswa dari 31 siswa) di Siklus 1 dan 100% (31 siswa) di Siklus 2. Disamping itu, nilai dari setiap aspek, yaitu isi, susunan umum teks, dan penggunaan bahasa dan kosakata juga meningkat.

Berdasarkan temuan dalam penelitian ini, disarankan kepada guru bahasa Inggris untuk menerapkan comic strips dalam mengajar menulis, terutama teks narasi. Dalam menerapkan comic strips, guru diharapkan mengajar dengan cara yang bervariasi agar siswa tidak bosan. Disarankan juga agar guru selektif dalam memilih cerita yang tepat untuk membuat siswa lebih tertarik dan fokus dalam melakukan setiap kegiatan di kelas. Peneliti selanjutnya disarankan untuk menggunakan comic strips untuk jenis teks, ketrampilan, atau kelas dan jenjang pendidikan yang berbeda. Sebagai tambahan, peneliti selanjutnya disarankan untuk lebih memperhatikan tentang penggunaan huruf kapital di speech bubbles.
