Implementing Cooperative’ STAD’ Method to Improve the Reading Comprehension Achievement of the Students of MAN 1 Kota Bima. (Thesis)

Realizing the importance of English mastery in improving the quality of Indonesian human resources, the government of Indonesia has decided that English is one of the compulsory subjects especially for junior and senior high school students. Teaching English is directed to master the four language skills namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Depdiknas, 2004). Reading is one of the language skills which must be taught in senior high school students. The teaching of reading for senior high school level aims to enable the students to read and understand the text and any materials written in English. However, based on the finding of preliminary study, the teaching of reading in MAN 1 Kota Bima did not facilitate students to be skilled in reading yet. The students still get some difficulties in finding general and specific information, identifying main ideas, identifying explicit and implicit information. This condition was caused by several factors such as; the English teachers are very lack of teaching strategy which can handle the students to be more active toward understanding the materials, the students have low motivation and sometimes passive in learning the English subject, the materials presented in textbook are very difficult for the students, the English teachers do not modify and develop materials from the textbook based on the students' interest, the English teachers seldom use media to support the learning activity.

Therefore, the study is designed to improve the students' reading comprehension achievement by implementing cooperative STAD method. The objective of this study is to find out how the cooperative STAD method can be implemented to improve the students' reading comprehension. In Students Team-Achievement Division (STAD) activity, students are assigned to four member learning teams that are mixed in performance level, achievement, skills, and sex. The major function of the team is to make sure that all team members are learning, and more specifically, to prepare its members to do well in the test.

The study employs Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles, in which the researcher is assisted by a collaborative teacher in conducting the study. The study is conducted in a single class that consists of forty two students as the subjects of the research. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. To collect the data, the researcher used some instruments such as questionnaire, observation sheets, field notes, and students' reading test.

The findings of the study show that implementing cooperative STAD method in the teaching of reading comprehension is effective in improving the students' reading comprehension. The improvement is shown by the increase of the students' average scores in the end of Cycle 2. The students' average score in pre-test was 58.46. Then, In the end of Cycle 1, the students' average score did not meet the criteria of success. It was only 64.88. But, in the end of Cycle 2, the students' average score became 72.44.

Based on the strength and weaknesses of implementing cooperative STAD method in teaching reading comprehension, it is suggested that the English teachers who teach in MAN 1 Kota Bima apply this method in their class especially in teaching reading comprehension. Meanwhile, for the students, it is suggested that the finding of this study gives an alternate for them to get the strategy as a variation of learning activities that can improve their reading comprehension. To the future researchers, particularly those who are interested in applying cooperative STAD method in their classroom research, it is suggested that they conduct further study using STAD method to improve the students' reading comprehension and to lessen their difficulties in reading classes. In additions, they also suggested to study how STAD method can be employed in other language skills.
