The correlation between Students’ Visual-Spatial Intelligence and Technical Drawing Ability in Building Drawing Engineering Expertise in SMK Negeri 6 Malang

Abstrak


This research is based on the problems where students trying to comprehend drawings or pictures. Some of the students find it hard to figure out the perspective of the pictures, patterns, geometry, and spatial relevancy. Disruption in understanding the concept of the picture will affect the students of Construction Engineering Vocational High School who majority are engaged in visual spatial field. The study will be evolved around visual spatial intelligence which is related with the drawing ability of the students themselves. The purposes of this research are to analyze the visual spatial intelligence of the students, technical drawing ability, along with the relation between visual spatial intelligence and technical drawing ability of the architectural students in SMK Negeri 6 Malang.

The method used in this research is quantitative research. The subjects of this research are XI TGB 1 class and XI TGB 2 class which consist of 47 students. The technics used to collect the data are psychological tests from Psychological Faculty Universitas Negeri Malang, and through the documentation from the relevant teachers.

 

The result of the research shows that spatial intelligence of the students in SMK Negeri 6 Malang reached around 44.7%, with 36.2% for the students with high level visual spatial intelligence, average level around 14.9% and lowest level was around 4.2%. The drawing ability based on the scores of subject Architecture were considered in categories excellent with 46.80% and good with 53.2%. There is a positive correlation between visual spatial intelligence and technical drawing ability with marks r=0.329 and p(sig)=0.024, according to the analysis result and the study about the correlation between visual spatial intelligence and technical drawing ability of the architectural students in SMKN 6 Malang. The conclusion of this research  are (1) an overview of visual spatial intelligence of students was high with an average score of 19.74, (2) description of technical drawing skills students both with an average value of 79.36, (3) there is a positive correlation visual intelligence the ability to draw spatial engineering building engineering program students at SMK Negeri 6 Malang.
