Berdasarkan pengalaman dan observasi yang dilakukan di Program Studi S1 Pendidikan Teknik Mesin Universitas Malang pada mata kuliah praktikum teknik pelapisan dan perlakuan panas (heat and surface treatment) proses pembelajaran masih menggunakan metode konvensional (praktikum). Proses pembelajaran tersebut dapat membuat mahasiswa menjadi pasif dan menurunkan minat baca. Tujuan dari penelian ini adalah untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, perlunya pengembangan modul yang dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa untuk aktif di dalam kelas (mandiri) dan meningkatkan minat baca.

Pengembangan modul ini dilakukan dengan teknik penyusunan menulis sendiri. Metode pengembangan yang di aplikasikan yaitu menurut Pustekom Depdiknas 2008. Adapun langkah-langkah pengembangan sebagai berikut: bedah kurikulum, identifikasi media, pengembangan naskah, produksi, validasi, penyempurnaan, tes/uji coba dan revisi.

Hasil dari penelitian pengembangan ini yaitu modul untuk praktikum teknik pelapisan dan perlakuan panas (heat and surface treatment) yang telah di validasi. Hasil validasi konten yang didapatkan sebesar 71.25% yang memiliki klasifikasi cukup valid. Hasil validasi keterbacaan memiliki klasifikasi valid dengan persentase sebesar 91.68%. Mahasiswa menyelesaikan pembelajaran mandiri dengan modul selama 2-3 hari, hasil post-test dari 16 mahasiswa, 14 diantaranya lulus ujian. Daya tarik mahasiswa terhadap modul sebesar 82.40% yaitu termasuk pada klasifikasi sangat menarik. Dari hasil post-test, kuantitas untuk kerja dan daya tarik maka modul dapat dinyatakan efektif.

Based on experiences and observation carried out at the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering Education State University of Malang in the practical course of heat and surface treatment are still using conventional method (practicum) to learning. That learning method can leads to passive behavior and low interest in reading. The aim of this research is to overcome those problem, there’s need to develop a module that can improve undergraduate student’s ability to be more active in class (independent) and increase their interest in reading.

The development of this module is carried out with self-writing technique. The development method that used was from Pustekom Depdiknas 2008 (Information and Communication Technology Center Ministry of Education). The development steps are as follow: curriculum review, media identification, script development, production, validation, refinement, test/trial and revision.

The result of this research and development is module for heat and surface treatment practical course which has been through validations. Result for the content validation were obtained at 71.25%, which had a fairly valid classification. Result for face validation were obtained at 91.68%, which had a valid classification. Undergraduate students complete their independent studies for 2-3 days, post-test results which from 16 students, 14 of them passed the exam. The attractiveness of module from students were at 84.40%, which had a high interesting classification. From the results of post-test, quantity for work and attractiveness this module can be stated as effective.
