Based on observations and collaborative teaching in grade X RPL 1 in SMK Negeri 1 Banyuwangi, the researcher obtained information that in the learning process, especially for practical work, the teacher still use conventional teaching method so that the students’ practical work performed poorly. This condition caused students of which 70% were still below the KKM for their score. The learning process also did not have a reference for practical work module, so learning process for practical work only followed the instructions which was given by the teacher. However, practical work learning process really influences the students’ quality competence. Regarding that problem, the researcher wanted to solve the problem by implementing a model of learning which called Basic Programming. This model is an alternative in teaching practical work and focuses on practical learning centered on the students. Work-based learning is an instructional model that emphasizes on practical work to increase the competence of learners that will affect the quality of their work in the future.

The type of this research is the Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis and Mc Taggart model. The steps of CAR can be described into four as follows: constitute a plan, action, observation and reflection. The sample of this research was grade X RPL 1 which consists of 33 studentsin the Basic Programmingsubjects.

The data says that, the results of this research showed the improvement for some students’ competencies. In the first cycle, the cognitive competency was 30.3% and increased to 81.8% in the second cycle. For psychomotor domain, the result was n 42.4% in the first cycle, and after the second cycle it increased to 100%. For affective competence, in the first cycle was 60.6% and it increased to 97% in the second cycle. The applications of learning models were successfully held by 90.7%. As a conclusion, there are significant improvements of students’ competencies by using work-based learning model for teaching practical work.
