Language error is the form of language deviation done by learners so that it would become problems in verbal and written communication. One of the language mistakes is misspelling such as improper use of period, comma, improper dictions, and improper placements of capital letters.

In the use of written language in the students of fourth grade of SDN Madyopuro I Sub-District of Kedungkandang Malang City, some deviations were still found. Those deviations of language rules were commonly in the form of the improper use of spelling in the essay writings. This improper use of spelling resulted in the frequent miscommunications.

This research attempted to find the language errors description: (1) were there any misspelling in the essay writing of fourth graders of SDN Madyopuro 1 Malang, (2) what kind of mistakes can be found in the essays of fourth graders of SDN Madyopuro 1 Malang?

The population of this research was fourth graders of SDN Madyopuro I Sub-District of Kedungkandang Malang City, and the sample was acquired through the purposive sampling technique that is the samples were taken with certain purposes and sources. He methods used in this research was descriptive method. The data collected was then analyzed. The qualitative technique was being used to find the description and the form of the misspelling in the essays.

The data analysis results are as follows: (1) there were errors in the students’ essays in the form of misuse of period and commas, misuse of diction, and misplacement of capital letters. (2) the errors done by students  are: misuse of period mark 9,31%, misuse of comma 10,34% both can be classified as minor error. Misuse of diction with the percentage of 22,41% can be classified as minor error.  The misplacement of capital letters with the percentage of 44,82% can be classified as average error. The misplacement of capital letters was the most errors done by students.

From the data analysis description, the conclusion is that fourth graders of SDN Madyopuro I made language errors in the forms of misspelling, misuse of period mark, commas, misuse of diction, and misplacement of capital letters.

Thus, the suggestion for Bahasa Indonesia teachers is that they should consider writing activity as the process to help students develop ideas that will be developed again to be essays by using proper and correct spellings. The writing techniques and contents of student should be the priority. The purpose is that, in the future, students’ essays will always be good in the aspects of contents and writing techniques.
