The importance of reading for life and academic purposes is obvious. It also has a great influence to other English skills and English components. However, some problems always reveal in teaching and learning of reading, specifically the materials of reading comprehension. The students of SMP Negeri 3 JangkangSanggau found it hard to understand some reading materials in the textbooks provided at school and they also lacked vocabulary. The problems occurred because the reading materials were far from the condition of students. That is why they needed reading materials in which the topics were familiar with them and based on the students’ cultures, social lives, and environment to attract their attention.

This study is an educational Research and Development. It is aimed at developing supplementary materials of reading comprehension for the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 3 Jangkang. The materials are based on local contexts of students or the conditions which are related to students’ cultures, social lives, and environment at Sanggau Regency.

This study used R & D proposed by Borg and Gall (1987) with some modifications considering that the stages can collect the needed data to produce the educational product that finally can solve the problems. The steps are needs analysis, planning, development, expert validation, try-out, and final product. The needs analysis was carried out by interviewing the English teachers, doing a survey, distributing questionnaire, and investigating other relevant topics. In planning stage, the researcher planned the contents, the structure, and the specificationof the product. Then the researcher developed the reading materials, texts recording of an English native speaker’s voice, and the teacher’s manual. After that, the draft was validated by two experts and the first revision was based on their input. The revised materials were then tried out and the data in the try-out was gained from the questionnaires for the second revision. After that, the final product is ready to use.

The product consists of a book, a teacher’s manual, and audio materials of texts recording. The book comprises fourteen units. The reading passages cover descriptive, recount, and narrative texts. The teacher’s manual contains the guide for teacher in using the book and answer key. The audio materials contain the audio recording of reading texts. The audio materials were saved in Compact Disc (CD), flash disk, and or cellular phone to be transferred to and used in VCD/DVD player, computer, or cellular phone. The existence of the product can solve the problems faced in teaching and learning readingcomprehension. The difficult materials and the topics which were far from students’ local contexts in the textbooks provided at school can be answered by providing familiar topics which based on local contexts in the product. The familiar topics that are interesting for students can motivate them to learn and activate their background knowledge. The students can also learn language from the texts. The exercises can be used to measure the students’ comprehension of reading materials and to train them answering reading comprehension questions. In addition, the audio recording can be used as a model for reading aloud.
