The result of the preliminary study at the 4th grade students of SDN Kauman Bangil, showed that the students' ability in understanding text contents in Indonesian language learning on the first semester of 2010-2011 academic year, not yet implemented optimally. Based on the learning outcomes of 24 students, only eight students (33,3%) had learning mastery.Therefore, this study carried out in order to: 1) describing the process of the use of SQ3R method to improve the students' ability in understanding the content of the text in Indonesian language learning at the 4th grade students of SDN Kauman Bangil, 2) describing the increased capacity in understanding the content of the text by SQ3R method in Indonesian language learning at the 4th grade students of SDN Kauman Bangil.

The problem solving was done by classroom action research (CAR), collaboratively between researcher and collaborator by using SQ3R method. The reseacher takes the 4th grade that consists of 24 students as the subject of the research. In gathering the data, the researcher does some ways to collect the data, such as doing tests, observation, conducting interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data were analyzed by descriptive percentages and descriptive qualitative.

The results of the research show that the SQ3R method increasing students' ability in understanding the content of the text. In the first cycle, the test results show that the students who obtained score ≥70 increased to 66,7% (16 students) with an avarage score 69 from 33,3% (8 students) with an avarage score 59 in the pre-research, or increased 33,4%. In the second cycle, the students' ability to understand text contents increased again to 83,3% with an avarage score 74, or increased 16,6% therefore the classroom action research can be said successful and terminated on the second cycle.

The researcher suggest to other researchers uses the SQ3R method on other lesson in future as a variation. In this study, there were four students (16,7%) who had not got leraning mastery. This can be considered by other researchers on similar research to get the better result in future.
