Classroom learning can’t be separated from various kinds of problems. One of the problem is the low motivation to learn and critical thinking ability. It is known through analysis of the causes of low learning motivation and critical thinking ability which consist of

1) student,

2) teacher,

3) infrastructure facilities, and

4) learning model strategies.

To overcome these problems, an appropriate learning model is needed and oriented to students competence, especially in learning motivation and critical thinking ability. The recommended learning model to overcome these problems is the Guided Discovery Learning model. Thus, the purpose of this study is to increase learning motivation and critical thinking ability of students in XI IPS 1 class SMA Negeri 2 Genteng Kab. Banyuwangi uses the Guided Discovery Learning model.

This study is a type of Classroon Action Research (PTK) with research subjects of 36 student in XI IPS 1 class SMA Negeri 2 Genteng Kab. Banyuwangi. This research was conductd in two cycles, each cycle consisting of six steps of the learning process which included giving stimulation, formulation problems, collecting data, processing data, verifying data, and drawing conclusions. The data used in this study is the value of the results of the learning motivation questionnaire and the value of the test results of the students critical thinking ability. Filling out the motivational questionnaire was carried out during the pre and post actions, while the critical thinking ability test was carried out after the cycle I and II actions.

 

The results showed an increase in pre to post action learning motivation due to the use of learning media, such as video, ppt, and the surrounding environment. While critical thinking skills from cycle I to cycle II increase the motivation of students required to argue in each lesson. The average value of pre action student motivation was 55.47 and post action was 79.61, indicating that there was an increase from pre post action of 24.14 (30.32%). While the average value of students critical thinking ability in the first cycle was 67.17 and the second cycle was 80.47, indicating that there was an increase of 13.3 (19.8%). Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the Guided Discovery Learning model can increase learning motivation and critical thinking ability in XI IPS 1 class SMA Negeri 2 Genteng Kab. Banyuwangi
